Abstract

The rapid development of social media has had a significant impact on the communication patterns of adolescents, particularly within the context of formal education. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the intensity of social media use and students’ verbal politeness at SMP Islam Terpadu Tamaddun Pamulang. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, using observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation as data collection techniques. Informants consist of students, subject teachers, and the principal, selected through purposive sampling. The findings reveal that students’ intensity of social media use is relatively high, averaging 3–6 hours per day. Such high intensity contributes to the decline of verbal politeness markers such as greetings, polite requests, respectful intonation, and appropriate word choices. Interview results indicate that students frequently imitate linguistic styles from social media content, while teachers and principals observe a shift from face-to-face communication norms toward a more informal digital communication culture. The study concludes that social media significantly influences the decline of students' verbal politeness. Therefore, digital literacy enhancement, language etiquette education, and strong collaboration between schools and parents are crucial.
