Abstract

This study aims to analyse the mental block challenges experienced by visually impaired students, the factors that influence self-acceptance, and the strategies used to overcome them. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach with six visually impaired student informants from several universities in Makassar. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation, then analysed using data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing techniques. The results show that the social stigma experienced by visually impaired students often triggers mental blocks in the form of low self-esteem, alienation, and difficulties in adapting to the academic environment. However, through self-acceptance and social support from family, friends, lecturers, and the community, students are able to develop effective adaptation strategies. These findings emphasise the importance of an inclusive approach in higher education and the need for policies that favour people with disabilities.
