Abstract

Drug abuse is a social problem that increasingly threatens children and adolescents, not only in urban areas but also in rural communities, including Mbawa Village, Donggo District, Bima Regency. The family, particularly parents, plays a crucial role as the primary line of defense in preventing drug abuse among children. However, various social changes and structural limitations have caused parental prevention strategies to be less than optimal. This study aims to analyze parental strategies in preventing drug abuse among children and to identify the challenges in their implementation using Talcott Parsons’ Structural Functionalism theory, particularly the AGIL model (Adaptation, Goal Attainment, Integration, and Latency). This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving parents, community leaders, village government officials, and adolescents in Mbawa Village. The findings indicate that parental prevention strategies remain basic, such as providing advice and restricting social interactions, but are inconsistent and not supported by adequate drug-related literacy. The main challenges include weak parental supervision, declining community social control, limited drug prevention socialization by the village government, and the uncontrolled influence of technology and social media. The AGIL analysis reveals dysfunctions in all elements of the social system, resulting in the inability of families and communities to provide maximum protection for children. This study concludes that effective drug abuse prevention requires strengthening the integrated roles of families, communities, and village governments so that the social system can function optimally in protecting children and adolescents.
