Abstract

The study of local cultural heritage preservation is important to understand how traditional symbols persist amidst modern social dynamics. This study aims to examine the existence of the preservation and development of Tope Le'leng as local wisdom in Bulukumba Regency. Using a qualitative approach and symbolic interactionism theory, this study examines how the Bulukumba community interprets Tope Le'leng not only as traditional clothing, but also as a symbol of identity, social status, and shared values. Data were obtained through interviews, observations, and literature reviews, then analyzed descriptively. The results of the study indicate that Tope Le'leng plays an important role in maintaining the cultural identity of the Bulukumba community while contributing to social and economic aspects, especially for female artisans. Despite facing the challenges of globalization and shifting interests of the younger generation, the existence of Tope Le'leng is maintained through revitalization efforts, promotion of cultural tourism, and involvement of the younger generation in creative development. Thus, Tope Le'leng is not only a cultural heritage, but also a strategic socio-economic asset for the local community.
