Education plays a strategic role as a means of reducing social inequality in society. Inequality in access and quality of education remains a major factor reinforcing social stratification, particularly for groups with limited economic and geographic backgrounds. This study aims to examine the role of education as an instrument of social mobility and to examine how education can be optimized to reduce social inequality in society. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a library research method. Data were obtained from various scientific literature sources, including academic books, national and international journal articles, and education policy documents relevant to the issue of social inequality and educational equity. Data analysis was conducted using content analysis techniques through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate that education plays a crucial role as an instrument of social mobility, enabling individuals to improve their quality of life and enhance their social position. This is based on statistical data that shows that the proportion of the population in higher education in Mataram City is 12.76% by 2024. However, various types of inequalities in access and quality of education persist, as well as policies that are not yet fully equitable, which are major obstacles to efforts to reduce social inequality. Therefore, educational policies oriented toward social justice, equitable access, and improved learning quality are needed so that education can function optimally as a means of social transformation. This research confirms that inclusive and sustainable education is key to realizing social justice and community well-being.
